Although better known for hard-hitting soul and funk, Curtis Mayfield also had a softer touch, as he demonstrates with great finesse on this 1976 work. The silky-smooth opener “In Your Arms Again” and the buttery ballad “P.S. I Love You” seem custom-made for boudoir scenes like the one on the cover. Yet Mayfield extends his mastery to the uptempo tracks, too, adapting his symphonic brand of R&B to the needs of disco dancers without any sacrifice of sophistication on the jubilant “Party Night.”
