12 Songs, 33 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

No album exemplifies Smokey and co.’s varied gifts better than this. The guys wrote all but one of the tunes themselves—a rarity for mid-'60s R&B groups—and those songs display enormous range. You'd be hard-pressed to find another act that could deliver a ballad as poetic and tenderly melodic as "The Tracks of My Tears" or a rump-shaker as funky and infectious as the title track, let alone both. And another voice as sweetly soulful as Smokey's—particularly on the aching “Ooo Baby Baby”—simply doesn't exist.
