Editors’ Notes

Love Songs offers a well-picked selection of Teena Marie’s most intoxicating bedroom jams from her days with Epic Records. These tracks — released between 1983 and 1990 — make it clear why Marie was hailed as R&B’s queen of sweet seduction. Songs like “Cassanova Brown,” “Ooo La La La” and the Ronnie McNeir duet “We’ve Got to Stop Meeting Like This” are fervent testimonies of desire, rendered with the singer/songwriter’s impeccable sense of songcraft and timing. Marie’s roots in old-school R&B are evident in the Philly Soul-tinged “Dear Lover” and “Miracles Need Wings to Fly,” while “Shangri-La” finds her adding techno-pop influences to her sound. She’s at her best in smoldering ballads like “Shadow Boxing” and ‘If I Were a Bell,” tunes that give her room to rise to shimmering vocal heights. “My Dear Mr. Gaye” — a fervent tribute to the late, great soul icon — is an unexpected choice for this collection, but still a welcome one. Pour the wine, dim the lights and get ready to enjoy Lady T. at her romantic best.

Customer Reviews

Great songs, but some are missing!

This collection of some of her best love songs is definitely on par with some of the other compliations of Teena's music, but this one is one of the best. My favorites: "Cupid Is A Real Straight Shooter," "Miracles Need Wings To Fly" and "If I Were A Bell" from Ivory, "Fire and Desire" (IN IT'S ENTIRETY!) from Rick James' Street Songs, "Cassanova Brown," "Dear Lover," and "Shadow Boxing" from Robbery. These truly are marvelous songs, but I can think of a few that should have been on here like "You Make Love Like Springtime," "Aladdin's Lamp," and "Stop The World." Trouble is, there are so many wonderful songs that it's hard to get all of them on one disc. Maybe one of these days the record labels can shape up, and release a box set that includes ALL of her CD's!!!!! Until then, five stars for great effort by the folks who issued this CD, and of course, the remarkable voice that is Lady T.

Missing a great one

No white artist sang R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals were so black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Marie grew up in west Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its heavy black population. The singer/songwriter/producer was in her early twenties when, around 1977, she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor and paramour-to-be,...
