Album Review

Kittie returns from their debut album much, much angrier than before. In fact, despite the first album's aggressive tone, the band spews venom over the tracks with a brutal passion on this one. That does not always translate into great songs, as the disc opener, "Oracle," proves with its repetitive pounding that definitely sounds angry, but sounds pointlessly angry. But it can work in their favor on tracks too, like the Pantera-esque "Severed," which bubbles over with rage. The alternative rock of "In Winter" changes the pace a little with its smooth vocals and slow riffing, as does the piano metal dirge "Safe." Their cover of Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell" takes the driving urgency of the original and turns it into a Metallica-style riff-fest, which comes off as interesting without ever truly getting engaging. The band is definitely heavy and their style of clear vocals over chugging death metal is certainly interesting. But one cannot help but feel mildly disappointed by their sophomore effort. While there are some good songs here, the band still needs to take the next step before they truly start writing great albums. As it is, this is an average album by a promising band who needs to find a distinct identity.

Awesome female angst

I have to admit at first I wasn't into Kittie at all. I had seen bits of their Charlotte Video on MTV and wasn't interested. But a friend of mine LOVED them and kept talking about them. Then one morning before work I caught the 'What I always wanted' video. I instantly fell in love with Kittie and haven't looked back since. My favorite songs on this album are 'In Winter', 'Safe', 'No Name' and 'What I Always Wanted'. It’s a great CD from a band with serious potential.

Kittie rocks!

'Oracle' is a shock to the rock palette of anyone who enjoyed their debut. Dropping all pretensions of nu-metal glam, this is an all-out metal onslaught! While the songs aren't necessarily all that imaginative, the overall tone of this album remains consistent. The vocals are utterly amazing. Kittie leaves nothing behind as they plow through 11 tracks methodically. My own personal bias aside (as this is my favorite Kittie album), I think you should look at downloading this whole album. 'Oracle' should be experienced in its entirety. Each track complements the next. None of their other albums maintain the same level of quality throughout. This album shows how Kittie became a force to deal with in the metal world.

I never heard of Kittie until I saw the video for What I Always Wanted. Since then I have been a die hard fan. This cd is some of their heaviest stuff. The first two songs on the cd are brutal along with the others but this cd does have its melodic moments in In Winter, Safe, and Pink Lemonade. Once you listen to this cd you will definetely want to be hearing more!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Schoolgirls Mercedes Lander (drums) and Fallon Bowman (guitar) met in gym class and said, "Let's play together!" And thus, Kittie was born. At least, that's how legend has it, and it's not that far from the truth. Four teenage girls with a love of heavy metal, a desire to prove naysayers wrong, and a passion to rock formed the hard-sounding metal-esque quartet in 1997 while still in high school. One part glam rock and one part death metal, the women of Kittie signed with the NG Records-distributed...
