Editors’ Notes

In a set of recordings captured mostly on a 2011 tour, Wayne Shorter returns to Blue Note after a 43 year absence sounding vital, relevant, and uncompromising. With his trio of heavyweights (pianist Danílo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade) Shorter demonstrates his authoritative relevance as a composer—after deconstructing “Orbits” (from 1967’s Miles Smiles) he offers no less than six new compositions. Impressive for an 80-year old, right? Wait until he picks up his horn. The interplay and improvisational aptitude fills this Editors' Choice with hairpin turns, exploratory dialogue, and brash musical stunts. When Shorter hits the stratosphere while soloing on the 23-minute “Pegasus,” the mics catch an astonished Blade utter, “Oh my God.” Our sentiment exactly.

Customer Reviews

The combination of these 4 is almost alchemic. Blade is especially dynamic. He increases the intensity tenfold. And even at 80 years old, Shorter still torches everything he can get his hands on. This album has shown me that music can't be quantified by a number, like an age. Music is measured by its audience, and this member of the audience approves.

Fantastic Album

I really enjoyed this album. The instuments are very crisp. I am still rather new to Jazz, but I found this to be a lot of fun.

Love this record so much I had my kids singing the Orbits melody throughout the performance. All master musicians with honest intentions. This recording received a Grammy today :) I love iTunes but the choice to not put this record in front with the other Grammy winners is embarrassing. Please give it its fair day in the sun.

Though some will argue about whether Wayne Shorter's primary impact on jazz has been as a composer or as a saxophonist, hardly anyone will dispute his overall importance as one of jazz's leading figures over a long span of time. Though indebted to a great extent to John Coltrane, with whom he practiced in the mid-'50s while still an undergraduate, Shorter eventually developed his own more succinct manner on tenor sax, retaining the tough tone quality and intensity and, in later years, adding an element...
