After 40 something years, this is still one of the cookinest, grovinest recordings of all time featuring three hall of fame musicians. Never mind that Jimmy Smith can knock you out of your chair with stunning licks, his FEET are the star here with head boppin bass grooves. Aspiring jazz guitarists will want to commit Kenny Burrell's solos to memory as I have (Satin Doll) and Grady Tate is a master...nuff said. This recording is a must have.

The album that made me love jazz

So, it's 1965, I'm a sophomore in high school, playing trombone in a big band, and THIS trio album lands on my hi-fi. Haven't been the same since. Still listen to it 45 years later. The groove is everything on this record, and it doesn't quit -- even in a ballad. To this day, it's the most consistently swinging album in every way that I have heard. And, oh yeah, Kenny Burrell is amazing. SO melodic, you'd think he had it all written down!

get it!

My father had this album when I was a kid. It knocked me out then, and it knocks me out now; particularly the version of "Greensleeves", which may just be the swingingest piece of music ever, propelled by the stellar drumming of the sorely underrated Grady Tate. No big Oliver Nelson arrangements here, just the trio totally locked in. This is probably the only Jimmy Smith disc on Verve that can stand up to the best of his Blue Note recordings. Get it!

Jimmy Smith wasn't the first organ player in jazz, but no one had a greater influence with the instrument than he did; Smith coaxed a rich, grooving tone from the Hammond B-3, and his sound and style made him a top instrumentalist in the 1950s and '60s, while a number of rock and R&B keyboardists would learn valuable lessons from Smith's example. James Oscar Smith was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania on December 8, 1928 (some sources cite his birth year as 1925). Smith's father was a musician...
