Reseña de álbum

A straight CD reissue of Al Hirt's Jazz Band Ball from 1956, this is one of the finest recordings ever of trumpeter Al Hirt and clarinetist Pete Fountain. A classic Dixieland set, it finds Hirt and Fountain in their early prime quite inspired by each other's ideas. With the assistance of a fine rhythm section and the underrated trombonist Bob Havens, Hirt and Fountain romp through such numbers as "The Original Dixieland One-Step," "Royal Garden Blues," "Jazz Me Blues," and "South Rampart Street Parade." A special bonus is that Fountain takes very rare tenor solos on two songs, being showcased (and sounding like Eddie Miller) on "Washington and Lee Swing." Essential music for Dixieland fans.

the perfect dixie disc

this is a really well done reissue of classic Al Hirt that tells you why this guy was the King in New orleans and so popular for so many years......no one musically knew Al Hirt better than Pete Fountain I would imagine

AWESOME

To the best of my knowledge, this is about the only colaboration between these two "greats". They ended up not the "best of freinds" down the road. This album is a MUST for any dixieland buff.

Yeah

My dad had this on LP; I'm glad it's available here. Excellent session. The players are all lubed and ready. Al Hirt is really great. This band is not going for a re-creation of the 1920's sound; it sounds like guys in 1960 playing dixieland, but REAL GOOD.

A virtuoso on the trumpet, Al Hirt was often "overqualified" for the Dixieland and pop music that he performed. He studied classical trumpet at the Cincinnati Conservatory (1940-1943) and was influenced by the playing of Harry James. He freelanced in swing bands (including both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and Ray McKinley) before returning to New Orleans in the late '40s and becoming involved in the Dixieland movement. He teamed up with clarinetist Pete Fountain on an occasional basis from 1955 on, and...
