iTunes Review

While it's sometimes pointed out that this collection doesn't feature everything from Hank's Luke the Drifter persona or the songs cut with his wife, Audrey, that should be considered a positive, since neither outlet expressed his best music. Alone—and/or with the Drifting Cowboys as Hank Williams—he produced his best recorded moments. And the extensive amount of undubbed material here means that aside from The Complete Hank Williams, this is as thorough as you're likely to come upon. His earliest work is solid if unspectacular, but it doesn't take long for Hank to find the pocket. 1947's "Honky Tonkin'" starts the streak that doesn't let up until his death on New Year's Day 1953. "Six More Miles (To the Graveyard)," "Wedding Bells," "Lost Highway," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "I Just Don't Like This Kind of Living," "They'll Never Take Her Love from Me," "Cold, Cold Heart," "You Win Again," "Your Cheatin' Heart," and "Weary Blues from Waitin'" all stand the test of time, alongside another two dozen worthy contenders. Essential.

When I was a child this was the first artist I heard and I knew how powerful music can be. He had such an original sound and great pained voice I thought it was a masterpiece. Enjoy it very much.

An Indispensible American Icon

I often tell people if they want to understand just what music is all about they oughta take a listen to Hank. His craft for dead simple songwriting astounds me. Simply one of the best composers of all time. He wrote sad songs that chase the blues away. Hank Williams was a crucial precursor to Rock and Roll as evident by such later disciples as Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. Treat yourself to one of America's greatest icons!

Hank Williams is the father of contemporary country music. He was a superstar by the age of 25; he was dead at the age of 29. In those four short years, he established the rules for all the country performers who followed him and, in the process, much of popular music. Hank wrote a body of songs that became popular classics, and his direct, emotional lyrics and vocals became the standard for most popular performers. He lived a life as troubled and reckless as that depicted in his songs. Hiram King...
