Album Review

Pianist Hilton Ruiz has had a very successful career in both jazz and Latin music. On this Tropijazz release, he combines the two styles to form a very likable brand of Latin jazz. Ruiz utilizes such sidemen as Tito Puente (playing vibes or timbales on three songs), flutist Dave Valentin, tenor saxophonist David Sanchez, trumpeter Charlie Sepulveda, trombonist Papo Vasquez, bassist Andy Gonzalez and three notable percussionists (Giovanni Hidalgo, Ignacio Berroa and Steve Berrios) for Latinized versions of four jazz standards and five group originals (including three by Ruiz). The music is quite catchy, danceable and reasonably challenging. Recommended to fans of Latin-jazz.

Hilton Ruiz "Hands on Percussion"

It may be the best work from the late Hilton Ruiz. I have a collection of way over 8ooo songs and every time that a piece of this album is played it's amazing. Look at the players on their prime. Latin Jazz at its best. If you collect music, this album is a must have. Peace.

feelin' the vibe!

Really good it makes me want to well... Boogie down and get the latin side of me out!

In addition to classical studies, he explored jazz under the tutelage of the legendary Mary Lou Williams, and at 14 made his recorded debut with the Latin soul outfit Ray Jay and the East Siders....
