iTunes Review

Formed in California by a pair of Jamaican ex-pats, The Rastafarians perfectly caught the sound and spirit of mid-'70s roots reggae. With its clavinet and percussion, the title track harks back to Exodus-era Wailers, while the ominous dub echoes and fiery lead vocal on "Occupation" recall the heyday of Burning Spear. If you hear a Marley-like voice on "Roll Call," it belongs to Constantine "Vision" Walker, himself an ex-Wailer. The gospel harmonies on "Rasta Theme" make a fitting close to The Rastafarians' only album.

If you.....

If you have never heard of these guys (which most have not) upon listening to just the sample tracks you will instantly be drawn to this soulful and "real" roots music. Randomly discovered these guys from a record (yes vinyl) a friend purchased at a garage sale. Although it shows its release date as 2005, this album is far more seasoned than 3 years. Try 1981, in Santa Cruz, CA of all places. Still remains one of my favorite reggae albums of all time. If you truly love roots reggae, you will add this album to your roots collection without questioning it's worth. Even if you are not a big fan of reggae, any serious and dedicated music lover would be seriously deficient in his/her music collection if you fail to touch this one. This is one of those compilations that never gets old and will stick with you and yours for a 3 year old daughter is already hooked! Keepin it old school......JAH 1 .......Viva La Riva

Ditto what he said...

Once owned this album (and about 500 more) that I let a dear friend take after our breakup. It took me a long time to track this one down-- searched many a used record stores in the Santa Cruz area, where this band ruled during the mid and late '80s. Saw them many times -- always a great show. This is one of the greatest reggae albums of all time. Download it. Give it a few listens. I think you'll agree.

This was what we used to call rare grooves during our time. Just a few celebrated DJs used to own this album. They dont come any meaner....any better!!! ROOTS ROCK REGGAE!!!
