Editors’ Notes

Those who have followed Comet Gain’s David Feck through numerous change-ups since the band’s debut some 17 years ago will be utterly thrilled with Broken Record Prayers. Paving the way for a new full-length release, BRP is a collection of singles scattered amongst different labels, songs from compilations and Peel Sessions, and material from 1997 onward that just didn’t have a home. It’s as scattershot as the band’s storied past, and as thrillingly uneven and eclectic. Fans of bands like the Go-Betweens will love the off-kilter pop of “Hard Times,” “Books of California,” and “Asleep On the Snow,” while those looking for more of an edge will enjoy the taut wind-up of tracks like “Beautiful Despair” or “He Walked By Nite.” The spoken word, Velvet Underground-meets-Arab-Strap atmospherics on “Germ of Youth,” “Mainlining Mystery,” and “Record Prayer” vie for high honors with their cover of preeminent Kiwi post-punkers the Clean’s “Beatnik.” Current groups such as Los Campesinos and Love Is All (and self-professed fans the Cribs) owe a debt to this thankfully long-lived outfit.

The first edition of Comet Gain was formed in 1992; Feck initially conceived the group as a trio with bassist George Wright and drummer Phil Sutton, but the band truly found its sound the following year, when Jax Coombes replaced Wright on bass and...
