iTunes Review

Mike Kinsella’s name has mostly been known for his involvement with Cap’n Jazz, American Football, and other loud and proud Midwestern bands. But as a solo artist under the name Owen, Kinsella has shown his softer, acoustic side. Working here with vocalist Sarah Mitchell, he sings gentle versions of songs not always thought of as gentle. The Blake Babies’ “Girl in a Box” here sounds remarkably like a Mike Doughty pop song. The Promise Ring’s “Forget Me” sounds like Doughty and John Darnielle rolled into one. This plaintive approach works remarkably well, pushing forth the poetry in the words and giving the melodies and emotions a subtle, somber touch.

Great cover album

I really enjoy this album. It feels like a new Owen LP as he truly makes the songs his own. From the first song to the last this album pleases, with a highlight being borne on the FM waves of the heart featuring beautiful female vocals by Sarah Mitchell.
