Elvis Costello recorded this live album during a two-night engagement at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theater on May 11 and May 12, 2011. He brought back the spinning wheel that was spun to determine the setlist years ago. The selections are diverse, with intense covers of Nick Lowe's "Heart of the City" and The Rolling Stones' "Out of Time" nicely peppering a list that includes well-known tunes, slightly more obscure album tracks, and The Bangles' Susanna Hoffs on lead vocals for "Tear Off Your Own Head (It's a Doll Revolution)." Most importantly, the performances are electrifying, played with a precision and energy that brings the songs to current life. "I Hope You're Happy Now," from 1986's Blood and Chocolate, boasts real fury that carries through the set's first half. The piano ballad "God Give Me Strength" gives Costello a breather, but he's working hard for his paycheck here. "Watching the Detectives" retains its tension. "I Want You" turns up the friction to the breaking point.
Horrible. Everything here seems improperly phased, recorded, arranged and understood. Bad. And I LOVE Elvis. Oh well, buy something to support the guy and his doll.
God...give me strength!!!!
C'mon now....this is just wrong. Elvis has always been know for his ability to play "outside of the box"...
and it has been that ability and gift that keeps us on the edge of our seats, guessing what he will do
next. This is NOT it....it sounds like a rehearsal or a "run through" production done in his basement
and I know damned well he can do better than this...you're better off sticking to the originals....in the
meantime, I'll hold out for new material.
Elvis Costello Rocking and Rearranging
There is not a lot of new ground broken here, but there are good examples of Elvis' many moods (except country) and some nice arrangements with the full band treatment for Every Day I Write the Book, and What's So Funny about. Watching the Detectives, Radio Radio , and Mystery Dance still carry the edge of the Young Angry Elvis Costello and some less well known songs such as Man Out of TIme and I Hope Your Happy Now are well produced and accessible. It's all worth a listen if you aren't a Costello cogniscenti, and if you are then you've already listened...Enjoy
