Album Review

Led by bassist Joey DeMaio and his singular metallic musical vision, Louder Than Hell is another exercise in power metal evangelism peculiar to Manowar. The British Steel-like opener "Return of the Warlords" emphasizes the American band's rare ability to offer very European-sounding '80s metal. The ballad "Courage," like most of the group's slower numbers, is an abysmal failure. Fortunately, there are only a couple of these boring battle hymns included on this 1996 release. The shred-metal rhythmic constructs are also in limited quantity, but "Outlaw" with its pile-driving, 16th-note rhythm is up to the speedy standard set on The Triumph of Steel. A distinctly old-school Judas Priest vibe is apparent during the mid-tempo chunk of Louder Than Hell. Eric Adams' confident vocals don't wither one bit when compared to those of legendary screamer Rob Halford and reinforces the classic influence. Sure, Manowar's "true metal" flag-waving is tedious and goofy, but non-judgmental metal fans willing to overlook the bad comic book imagery will eventually marvel at the band's ability to create and capture their own brand of unapologetic power metal.

Customer Reviews

Itunes Reviewer an idiot

This is one of my favorite albums from Manowar and I have to say that for most music these Itunes reviewers are complete asstards who have no idea what their talking about and might once and awhile stick in a couple words to make it sound like they do.

OH. MY. GOD.

HOLY FREAKING GOD. ok, i admit, i was a huge fan of THE GODS MADE HEAVY METAL, but then i got my spirit lives on...screw eruption, man, this guy can HURT someone. either he's got arms and fingers hewn from solid steel or he isnt human. i mean...HOLY GOD!!!!!! i was absolutley speechless after hearing that. as a guitar player who can play EVH's ERUPTION--not to brag or anythin, just sayin--i hear this thing, my first response: o sweet jesus. thats all i could say before i was rendered speechless. to all guitar players: if you can play MY SPIRIT LIVES ON, you are officially an excellent player. and that, ladies and gentlemen, is the understatement of the year. i wont even try and fix it because its PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE. \m/ THE GODS MADE HEAVY METAL AND THEY SAW THAT IT WAS GOOD--THEY SAID TO PLAY IT LOUDER THAN HELL, WE PROMISED THAT WE WOULD--WHEN LOSERS SAY IT'S OVER WITH YOU KNOW THAT IT'S A LIE--BECAUSE THE GODS MADE HEAVY METAL--AND IT'S NEVER GONNA DIE!!!!!!

This album rules

Whoever wrote the blurb for this album is a tool. Every song on this album is truest of the true heavy metal, "Courage" especially. Hail and Kill!!!

One of the most internationally successful bands in all of heavy metaldom, Auburn, New York-born power metal outfit Manowar — Eric Adams (vocals), Karl Logan (guitars), Joey DeMaio (bass), and Donnie Hamzik (drums) — have sold over nine million records since their inception in 1980. Steeped in the pageantry of heavy metal, the group's approach was designed to be the raw, primal, Viking antithesis of classic rock, and their music followed suit, based on raw, aggressive riffs, with lyrics...
