Album Review

Singer/songwriter Katrina Carlson has been bubbling just under the surface of the pop music mainstream since her independent debut release of 2001, Apples for Eve; her songs have been picked up for advertising campaigns and TV-show soundtracks, and she's a regular fixture on Billboard's adult contemporary charts. Her sophomore effort finds her getting souped-up production worthy of any chart-topping diva, resulting in a rootsy but polished sound that brings to mind some of Sheryl Crow's better work. The album's centerpiece is a gorgeous love song titled "I Know You by Heart," which she sings in duet with Benny Mardones (who had a hit back in the '80s with "Into the Night"), but other highlight tracks include a subtly cynical rewrite of the Beatles on "New Shoes," the melodically cathartic and faintly country-flavored "Go-To Girl," and an unidentified track hidden after the brief, operatic outro at the end of the album. Very nice stuff indeed.

Got Because of Suddenly Beautiful

She's a great singer and songwriter. Suddenly Beautiful is the prize of the ablum. I first heard it played at work one night and loved it right away. I definitely recommend her if you want new music.
