iTunes Review

The unhinged gypsy-punk energy of O’Death’s first two releases is replaced by a deeper, more thoughtful intensity on Outside. Here they stay closer to their bluegrass and old timey musical influences, tapping into the feel of raw American folk while interpreting it with an adventurous flair. The quintet’s instrumentation includes banjo, fiddle, ukulele, bass, guitar, cello, and the distinctive warbled vocals of Greg Jamie, and their careful arrangements play up the tension and eeriness in the music. The dark and creepy imagery presented in the lyrics is supported by strange, skittering rhythms, odd pots-and-pans percussion, and taut banjo rolls. The album is long on atmosphere and drama with songs that are sparse and contemplative (“Bugs,” “Don’t Come Back”), dirge-like (“Alamar,” “The Lake Departed”), dynamic and moody (“Look At the Sun,” “Back of the Garden”), and stark and edgy (“Ourselves,” “Howling Through”). In reigning in some of their more frenzied impulses O’Death has created a focused and cohesive album that reflects a sound all their own.

Great

Not the typical O'Death but an absolutely amazing album if you like new-era indie/grass/punkroot style music. This is the graduate school of O'Death.

Bar Stompers Turn In Beautiful, Expressive, Tour de Force!

Known here and abroad as a frenetic punk-country bar band, O'death reveals it's beating, bleeding heart and soul big as all "Outside" on their new record! Layered walls of percussion and strings alternate with pensive, heart-rending ballads. Asian and Klezmer sounds bear witness to the wide-world of music at work here. Rhythmic, lyric and plaintive, it is anything but simple - but it IS simply beautiful

Hauntingly Beautiful!

Always have loved o'death. Ever since I heard the "Down to Rest" . This album seems a bit more ethereal and ghostly. Highly recommended for anyone who likes punk/goth that's not overly harsh on the ears.

Formed: 2003 in Purchase, NY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The boys in O'Death come from all over the Eastern Seaboard, but got together in 2003 while they were attending the State University of New York in Purchase, NY. They use folk styles — primarily bluegrass and old-time music — for a foundation, but punk, grunge, swing, rock, metal, and jazz figure heavily in their arrangements. The original members were drummer David Rogers-Berry and singer/guitarist Greg Jamie. Rogers-Berry approached Jamie after he finished a solo songwriter gig and...
