iTunes Review

Entering with a James Brown-inspired shriek, singer Brittany Howard is front and center on the group’s second album, Sound & Color, which channels Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield, and funky ’70s soul-jazz. While any Alabama Shakes record will live and die by Howard's emotion-packed pipes, this one brings a broader palette to the band's sound. From the smooth-soul vibes and strings of the title track and the snap-tight funk of "Don't Wanna Fight" to the barnstorming blues-rock of "Dunes," the band broadens its horizons while staying true to its soul-rock roots.

They're FINALLY Back

This album shows such amazing growth and maturity in almost every aspect; vocals, lyrics and overall production. I was scared that I was not going to like their next album, but I was worried for nothing! I can't wait to hear the whole thing!

Blown away

This band gives me goosebumps. Her staggering voice, the great songwriting, and fantastic sound. What's not to love, and be excited about.

This should be the most anticipated album of 2015 based on their powerful debut couple years ago and great attitude towards music. I wish we had more artists like Alabama Shakes who simply play great music and don’t act like fools in their down time for a sliver of fame. THESE GUYS ARE THE BEES KNEES!! Brittany is also really cool, I met her at the airport once!

Formed: 2009 in Athens, AL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Muscle Shoals-inspired, Athens, Alabama-based quartet Alabama Shakes formed in 2009 around the talents of Brittany Howard, Zac Cockrell, Steve Johnson, and Heath Fogg. Originally simply called the Shakes, the band's blend of fiery blues-rock and hard-hitting Southern soul drew comparisons to the Black Keys, Drive-By Truckers, the Detroit Cobras, and even Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. The band released an eponymous debut EP in September 2011, with plans to record a full-length album later in the year....
