Album Review

Overtime is really two CDs in one. On the instrumentals, particularly "Bass City" and "Blue in Green," guitarist Lee Ritenour sounds a lot like Wes Montgomery and he leads his group (which features either Ernie Watts or Eric Marienthal on tenor) through some relatively straight-ahead numbers filled with soulful and creative playing. The five vocal numbers are much more in the R&B/smooth vein and occasionally feature the presence of Ivan Lins. Clearly Ritenour was going for variety on this project. He sounds fine in both settings but probably should have recorded twice as much music and split this CD into two.

These Guys Can Play

This album showcases some amazing talent as Lee Ritenour plays songs from his earlier years up to the present. The record is great but you have got to get the live DVD to really appreciate how good these guys really are and how they play off of each other.

If you get this get the DVD!

Been a Lee "RIt," Grusin, Rushen, and Donnie Hathaway (and now his daughter) fan for a long time. The ensemble of Bad A** musicians he has assembled in Overdrive are some of the best I have ever heard. If you don't feel the "juice" moving in you from listening to these cuts, check your pulse. The DVD has more that this does not - and lets you see the impromptu vibes as Lee and group key off each other to produce what is sure to become a legendary piece of work. I watched the DVD and immediately bought it. Now I am here downloading most of the Overdrive songs. A Fantastic All-Star Jazz Ensemble! Jaw dropping and soul moving. Beyond the beyond. Ovedrdrive is solo on a level of jazz greatness few achieve.
