EDITORS’ NOTES

It's not surprising to learn that Mexican singer Raymix got his start producing trance. Those same rippling synths and bleeping hooks give this remix-heavy version of his debut album, Oye Mujer, its futuristic vibe, though his beats abandon the endless pulse of EDM for the choppy Latin funk of cumbia. It's an unlikely fusion that works beautifully. "Dime Amor" is pure club euphoria flecked with moments of melancholy, and "El Círculo" expands his remit into the hazy-from-the-heat ambience of tropical house, while the title track brings the hands-in-the-air ecstasy of techno to Latin pop.

About Raymix

Raymix is the electro cumbia recording and performing project founded by DJ, producer, composer, singer, and arranger Edmundo Gómez Moreno. He burst onto the scene in September of 2015 with the smash single "Oye Mujer," that wove together classic cumbia and various elements of Latin pop, reggaeton, and various Mexican, Puerto Rican, urban, and even Arabic styles -- he subtitled the single "Latin Stylish Music." Its video, showing only Moreno singing, dancing, and playing all the instruments, ran up over 73 million views, and the single reached the Top 20 of the Hot Latin Songs charts, earning Moreno the title "King of Electro Cumbia." Live, the troupe can number anywhere from six to ten members with a core of dancers as well as musicians. Subsequent videos for three singles the following year -- "Angel Movado," "Primer Beso," and "Dime Amor" -- ran up hundreds of millions of views and charted on streaming and download services. The "electro remix" video of the latter track, featuring Twin Rus h and Alpha Force, racked up another 28 million views. His 2017 pre-release single, "Perdoname," showcased a more driving cumbia sound and placed on Latin charts across multiple streaming services. His debut album, also entitled Oye Mujer, was issued in July. ~ Thom Jurek
