iTunes Review

A palpable sense of purpose and joy runs through this L.A.-based band’s 1998 debut. Reflecting their city’s vast diversity, Ozomatli thread together cumbia, rap, funk, salsa, and more. People cheer, whistles blow, records scratch. “Eva” is a soulful love song swirling around Spanish guitar, while MC Chali 2na’s loose-limbed rhymes ground tracks like “Super Bowl Sundae.” Outspoken lyrics about police brutality and economic inequality remind us of the band members’ background as labor organizers. Blasting Ozomatli = summer in the city.

The Best of the best

This is the first album from Ozomatli and it is one of the best albums I owned. One of the best buys of your life!!!

guaranteed to make you wanna dance

This album never gets old. Whenever I listen to it, I think of all the Ozomatli shows I've seen. Let me tell you - these guys don't disappoint! I've been to almost every show in the Seattle area since 1998. Though I do enjoy the new music, this is my favorite.

This is my favorite album of the '90s. Over the years I have purchased it many times over for friends & family, & still get thanked for doing so. The lyrics have deep social commentary on many tracks, but the music keeps your body moving. Listening to this album is like taking a walk down the inner-city streets of East L.A. Latin, funk, hip-hop all blended together with messages of unity & warnings of gang violence. There are lighter themes as well, such as Como Ves, La Misma Cancion & Chango. The band took their name from the Aztec god of dance. One listen & you'll know why. Ten years & counting, this album still sounds fresh & makes you want to move. HIGHLY recommended. If you get the chance, go see them live. The band has undergone several personnel changes, but are still an electrifying act.
