The Rza Presents Shaolin Soul Selection: Vol. 1

Though producer/actor/director RZA is best known as the visionary mastermind behind hip-hop superheroes Wu-Tang Clan, any fan of his work knows all about his deep love for classic soul music. Countless first-generation Wu records were built around samples and snippets from '60s-era R&B jams (both well known and super-obscure), especially from the folks at Memphis-based Stax Records. On this exceptional compilation, RZA mines the vaults for two dozen old-school favorites, from legendary superstars (Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Booker T & The MG's, William Bell) and lesser-known acts (Mel & Tim, Judy Clay, 24 Karat Black, The Mad Lads) alike. Even if you've never heard of RZA or Wu-Tang, this is a stellar collection that digs a lot deeper than the usual "best of" boxed sets. Everything here's great, but highlights are Albert King's "Cold Feet," The Dramatics' "In the Rain," and Black Moses' version of "Walk on By" (all 12-plus minutes of it).
