Album Review

The title of Tracy Lawrence's 2005 album Then & Now: The Hits Collection suggests that it's a greatest hits album — in fact, the sticker on the front cover bills the album as a "greatest hits" — but that's a little misleading. Instead of being a compilation of original hit recordings, Then and Now finds Lawrence revisiting a selection of his biggest hits — such as "Sticks and Stones," "Alibis," "Texas Tornado" and "Time Marches On" — adding two new songs ("Used to the Pain" and the war-themed "If I Don't Make It Back") to the mix. These new versions are a little more laid-back than the originals, and they're a little slicker too. And while that doesn't necessarily suit Lawrence's voice, which has grown a little thinner over the years, that doesn't make Then and Now a bad listen. It's a mellow, mature, comfortable record that finds Lawrence in a warm, reflective mood, and if his fans share his mood, they should find this enjoyable.

Customer Reviews

Bad record/play speed ....

The album is a good one, but the speed it plays is too fast and makes him sound like a chipmunk. Until something in this column from the editor says it has been corrected - don't buy. When it is fixed, there is a lot of good music here.

One of the most underrated country musicians

All the songs sound rerecorded. Tracy's voice may have changed a little over the years. If you like any of the songs here, and you should, download them off the original albums. You'll also find some hidden treasures in his album collection.

His Vocal Powers are Declining

The songs here are re-recordings of Tracy's hits. The original versions are better, and can easily be found, so there is no reason to buy this CD unless you are a die-hard fan. Tracy did a great job on these songs the first time around, (during the 1990s) but his voice has weakened quite a bit in the last few years. These recordings suffer noticably from Tracy's weakened voice. Buy the original versions, as they are great. These newer versions aren't so good. No reason to buy these so long as the better versions are around.
