Review the music not the cast
When you listen to this score, you don't see the actors, you don't read the writer's screenplay, you hear the music. The brilliantly atmospheric, deeply engaging music. To listen to this score, is to listen to a place that exists, yes, on the screen, but also in your mind as well. Whether you see the film or not, this score is, or better said, SHOULD BE, a soundtrack to any given day or night that you just want to escape into sounds and moods at the end of the world.
If anyone is interested...the Panoramic Remix lyrics are from a book called Pyramid of Fire. Here is what is what is said in the song:
On the Earth exists the worlds of nature: the informal life of waters, trees, insects, animals, and two classes of men. One class is the ordinary man, naked, inert, always menaced by death’s darts. The other class is the superior man. In the shade of the altar the maguey spines of penance become for him the wings of the soul and in his hands he harmonizes the four states of matter. He has achieved consciousness. He has achieved the power of Truth and can act. He is! The other man is like an agonized animal, tied to the tree from which he eats. He gives his vital energy to Tecciztécatl, the Moon, While his body is eaten by Tlaltecuhtli, the Earth. So everything devours and is devoured, eats and is eaten in the cosmic hierarchy. Plants eat from minerals and are eaten by animals. The animals eat plants and in their turn are eaten by the Earth. So does man, as animal organism, devour plants and is devoured by Earth in due time. And if he is only body, he has no other destiny. But the superior man feeds on sacrifice; he develops his soul and his soul becomes food for Tonatiuh, the Sun. So, as the maguey spines rest on the straw bed, the soul of the liberated man rests on the Hill of Heaven.
My favorite film score in a long, long time
I'll announce my bias right up front - I wrote the movie "The Book of Eli" but even if I didn't I'd still think this was one of the most beautiful, engaging, hypnotic and original film scores in years. I've been collecting film soundtracks and scores since I was a kid, I listen to them obsessively, and I've always believed that a soundtrack can make or break a film. Atticus Ross's inspired soundtrack for "The Book of Eli" not only helps make the film, it lifts it up to a whole other level. I can't thank Atticus & Leopold Ross and Claudia Sarne enough for the incredible work they did on this film, absolutely transcendent stuff.
