Papa Nebo was musically conceived as a fusion group along the lines of a jazz ensemble where there are no sidemen. It consisted of a jazz saxophonist, a classical/country violinist, drummer, rock electric guitarist, electric bassist, classical/jazz pianist, two acoustic guitars and vocals. The compositions ranged from country/rock fusion to jazz instrumentals. The group blended conventional song-formats with extended jazz and rock solos.
Ahmet Ertugun, the late legendary chairman of Atlantic Records and jazz aficionado signed the group. Eight months after release of the album, frustrated that Atlantic couldn’t find a market-niche, he returned the album with his blessings. The album has been reissued by Iris Music Group. Iris has also released two of Papa Nebo’s vocal soloists Michael Packer and Sandy Allen in anthologies of their recordings which also include sides from the Papa Nebo successor group Free Beer.
This album highlights and features early Bob Mintzer on saxophones and flutes, with two added representative sides from the original Papa Nebo album. The album is the last recording the musicians of Papa Nebo made as a group. It was a one-session live recording-jam on a gray day in the fall of 1971 in an obscure Westchester County Blauvelt NY recording studio. The members then splintered onto new horizons and musical directions.
Bob Mintzer today is a twenty year member of the Grammy award winning Yellowjackets, leads a Grammy winning big band and travels with his own quartet
Michael Packer who has released 11 albums on the IMG label, for the last 10 years has headed his acclaimed Michael Packer Blues Band. He has recently been inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame.
Sandy Allen appears regularly as a member of several bands, plays pedal and lap steel guitar and mandolin, and with his own band in support of his current CD “Horses To Water.”
Electric guitarist, Brenden Harkin, after the first Free Beer album, which he also produced, became lead guitarist in the heavy metal 70s group "Starz” and then on to Nashville to run his own recording studio.
Violinist Ann Leathers continues as soloist and studio musician on albums by Cyndi Lauper, Elvis Costello, Laurie Anderson, Rihanna, Elton John, and as a continuing member of the American Composers Orchestra.
Drummer Ken Adams: Artist Direct lists credits as drummer for various artists, record producer and album cover art direction.
Pianist Sal Costanza immediately after Papa Nebo left the music business to become an IRS tax-agent.
