What a gem of a find!

From the first few moments I put this album on I was hooked. I guess it could be classified as 'glitch' and the most obvious point of comparison is with a band like (post-Tri Repetae) Autechre. Oval is much more organic and less clean sounding than Autechre and make more use of distorted layers of sound. This is also much more of an atmospheric ambient album than most Autechre. Though it may seem pretty glitchy at first this album is actually pretty tonal. In fact, after a few plays it starts sounding remarkably warm and even lush in places. It's structured as 6 main tracks with short unnamed interludes between them (though named '=' to '=====' on iTunes). I find the interludes less interesting than the main tracks. I'll comment on one or two of the longer tracks individually: Episonik: a great opening with a rhythm provided by something that sounds almost like a repeating camera shutter. This is one of the more tonal and accessible tracks with layers of noise that have a breathy almost whistled quality. This is the music of robot cicadas. Zetrick: creepy. There's a sporadically repeating sound vaguely reminscent of cutting scissors. Might make great atmospheric music for a game like Silent Hill or Resident Evil. Motif: a beautiful track. Notable, I think, because of similarities to some of the tracks on My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless' - though I expect there is little similarity in the actual production process. Good headphones or speakers improve the experience - distortion (beyond what was intended in production) can bury a lot of the details that make this album such an experience.

mmmmm ovvvaaalll

Don't Buy It

Don't put this music on a stereo, CD player, iPod, or computer. This music makes electronics sound like they're malfunctioning. It's also stupid and pointless.

Formed: 1991 in Darmstadt, Germany

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Originally a group that, through attrition, developed into a solo outlet for founding member Markus Popp, Oval were perhaps known more for how they made their music than for the music itself. Their intriguing update of some elements of avant-garde composition, in combination with techniques of digital sound design, resulted in some of the most original, if somewhat challenging, electronic music of the 1990s. After Oval helped establish glitch as a distinct style -- as exemplified by Mille Plateaux's...
