iTunes Review

Two decades after the release of Tigerlily, her 1995 solo debut, Natalie Merchant reconfigures the songs that made that album a smash, creating a decidedly different but equally remarkable collection. Like Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now, Paradise Is There documents the effects of time—Merchant’s voice has intensified with age, and she inhabits the material with intimate familiarity. Experience has also changed her approach—the airy arrangement of “Wonder” and the extended take on “The Letter” (now shorn of its lilting piano) are welcome reinventions.

No Paradise Here

I wanted to love this and I totally embrace new arrangements and re-recordings. Unfortunately however, most tracks have been re-envisioned as slow and lifeless — the others have awkward arrangements and I won’t even talk about the Jealously track. Where has your passion gone, Natalie? I miss you.

Unconditional positive regard

Natalie Merchant has superior talent. I place her with Johnny Cash as one whom I never tire of listening to. Her voice and music have captured my attention since I was a teen. Both have matured like fine wine. She is beautiful, both inside and out.

Not convinced the new presentation is stronger.

For me there is something lost in this new effort. The heart that made this work sound weaker. The songs don’t draw me the way they once did. However, it is her work; and, now it sounds over worked to me.

Her literate, socially conscious songs established her among the preeminent women in pop music, while her solo debut -- 1995's Tigerlily -- helped pave the way for a number of female performers in a pre-Lilith Fair market. She continued releasing albums well into the 2000s, often examining specific genres or subjects, although Tigerlily...
