iTunes Review

Two decades after the release of Tigerlily, her 1995 solo debut, Natalie Merchant reconfigures the songs that made that album a smash, creating a decidedly different but equally remarkable collection. Like Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now, Paradise Is There documents the effects of time—Merchant’s voice has intensified with age, and she inhabits the material with intimate familiarity. Experience has also changed her approach—the airy arrangement of “Wonder” and the extended take on “The Letter” (now shorn of its lilting piano) are welcome reinventions.

Amazing idea, awesome new variations, strong vocals

Admittedly "Tigerlily" and "Ophelia" are my favorite Natalie Albums. Just heard the new versions of "Carnival" and "San Andreas Fault" and I am so freaking excited for this. What an amazing idea to re-record new versions of such an iconic album. Her vocals sound as good as they have in years. Age has done nothing to her amazing, unique way of singing. I'm very excited to hear what else she presents in the next few years. I can only hope for an "The New Ophelia Recordings" as well. :)

Unconditional positive regard

Natalie Merchant has superior talent. I place her with Johnny Cash as one whom I never tire of listening to. Her voice and music have captured my attention since I was a teen. Both have matured like fine wine. She is beautiful, both inside and out.

Anthem to our lives

Every generation has an artist who defies the times. From 10,000 maniacs to her debt solo career, Natalie Merchant is a true story teller. The words within her music resonate deep feelings for the listen. As I sit back and listen to her music, I am overtaken by a deep sense of nostalgia, a throw-back to a simpler time. Her new Album Paradise is There takes the listen back in time. These are the songs that define a generation the Anthem to our lives. As always it good to see the classic once again.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

After rising to fame at the helm of the popular folk-rock band 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant enjoyed even greater success as a solo artist during the mid-'90s. Her literate, socially conscious songs established her among the preeminent women in pop music, while her solo debut -- 1995's Tigerlily -- helped pave the way for a number of female performers in a pre-Lilith Fair market. She continued releasing albums well into the 2000s, often examining specific genres or subjects, although Tigerlily...
