Album Review

With Paradise Island, Lake gave listeners no real surprises. Indeed, their style of music could almost be looked on as a brand name. You pretty much knew from the get-go that any Lake album would be composed of well-written, arranged, and performed pop/rock pieces that showed slight (and sometimes not so slight) signs of progressive rock tendencies. The funny thing is, though, that the albums never really sound the same — they only sound like Lake albums. It is a shame these discs are so hard to come by. They are worth the effort, though, especially if music by bands like Supertramp is your thing.

Lake's Best

This is a terrific album from an under-appreciated band. Put Into the Night, Paradise Way and The Final Curtain up against anything from the late '70s and they don't just hold up well, they shine. In fact, they show well to this day. Check out Lake, but if you're only going to get a single work from their catalog, this is the one.

1979 Would not have been the same

We used to start all of our college parties with "Into the Night". The wolves were on the prowl. Great album. Great band. Great memories. A great european band that never caught on in the US.

Great underrated album and band

This was my first Lake album. I taped it off of WDHA's album in review. They would play a new album by a relatively unknown or new band in its entirety. I taped a lot of albums that way and learned about a lot of bands I never would have heard otherwise. Then I'd end up going out and buying their other albums if they had any, and Lake did. I picked up their 1st and 2nd albums soon after. I'm not sure why lake never caught on in the US. They certainly had enough catchy hooks and good enough lyrics. Maybe the promotion end of things just wasn't quite there. In my opinion, this was their best. If you like the samples pick up the whole album, it's well worth your money and time. Then go get Lake 1 and 2.

Formed: Germany

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s

This multi-national rock band was formed in Hamburg, Germany, in 1973. Initial members included Ian Cussick (b. Scotland; vocals), Geoff Pacey (b. England; keyboards), Bernie Whelan (b. Ireland; trumpet), plus four European partners (three German, one Italian). Despite innumerable line-up shuffles Lake’s harmonic, neo-orchestral approach to rock music remained intact, which led to a glowing and growing international reputation. Their self-titled 1976 debut album enhanced this impression further,...
