Album Review

Formerly of the aggressive feminist punk outfit Silverfish, Leslie Rankine renamed herself Ruby in 1995 and changed her musical tactics. Instead of hard-edged post-punk, Ruby's music is a dark, eerie fusion of trip-hop and industrial, with quietly menacing beats and droning synths. Although it could be said that she was simply trend-hopping with Salt Peter, Ruby's music is substantially better than Silverfish — it's more provocative, as well as better written. Not all of the album works, but Salt Peter remains a promising debut.

ahead of its time

i loved this album when it came out-- honestly, it was refreshing to hear female vocals mixed in my mostly skinny puppy/ ministry/ EN playlist of those days. now that hip-hop is blending more with other genres in the mainstream and dance-punk is all the rage, this sounds brand-new on a relisten. underheard alt/ industrial artist (what happened to her?)

Very creative mix. This is not your run of the mill alternative or hip-hop. The fusion of the two is amazing. Well done

For an album over 10 years old, it could easily hold its own with the most current music today.

Dubbing the project Ruby -- a name shared by both of their maternal grandmothers -- Rankine and Walk created a sonic backdrop closer to electronica...
