Wonderful discovery

I'm so happy a friend recommended Geographer to me. I still wonder how I could have missed them--they're fantastic! Unusual but effective instrumentation for a trio making what is essentially indie pop music (more or less), their sounds are difficult to pin down. Is that synthesizer or effected cello or guitar? Doesn't matter. Mike Deni continues to write heartbreaking--if occasionally impenetrable--lyrics, baring his soul without giving too much away, with his incredible voice. I'm not sure if he's gay, but some of the lyrics--"Original Sin," "Kites," and "Verona" for sure, but even "Paris," as well--lend themselves to such an interpretation, as though he's coming to grips with a self and a life still alien to him (but that could be my own biases, of course, coloring the interpretation). Certainly he continues to reference his deep personal losses (deaths in the family) that informed much of their debut LP. "Animal Shapes" is a perfect follow up and progression from "Innocent Ghosts" that will keep listeners coming back. I'm eager to hear what comes next.

A well crafted blend of instruments & moving voice

While no song is extremely unique, the overall sound of the albulm is one that is moving and will not soon be forgotten by those who listen to it.

Like a drug.

The project originated a year earlier, as family strife inspired Deni to relocate from his New Jersey hometown, and for the next several months he built Geographer's foundation by composing songs on guitar and a synthesizer he found on the street. Adding Blaz and Ostreicher to the fold, who...
