Brave New Folk Jazz

For those of you expecting a Frisellian folk song album, look out! Lone Prairie is that…a little bit, but it’s that and quite a bit more. Corey expands on the tradition of Jazzers taking on folk and traditional material in a fresh and interesting way. Sure, he’s capable of thoughtful reharmonization and pastoral beauty on Streets of Laredo, but things really start to get fun on In The Pines, where he toys around with the dissonant, shady corners of the tune with recklessness, chops, and a “devil may care” attitude. What’s interesting is that all of these versions, (and they are all quite different than you might expect)…all of these interpretations not only stay true to the lyrics and original intent, they expand our view of what we thought the song could be and do. Lone Prairie is Corey Christiansen growing in strides as his own voice in contemporary jazz interpretation.
