Album Review

This smooth-singing quintet faded after four woefully underappreciated albums on Sussex and Polydor Records. The choicest picks from those LPs appear on this veiled best-of collection. Blessed with a sultry female lead and a male that possessed a baritone like Jerry Butler's (only rangier), this Los Angeles-based group was something special. They deliver a peppy, jazzy version of "You Can't Hide Love" that's totally different from Earth, Wind & Fire's. Bill Withers' songs are like magical elixirs to Creative Source. They excel on his mellow "Let Me Into Your Life," where the male lead slides effortlessly from baritone up to falsetto, and the hypnotic "Who Is He and What Is He to You," which flows like Moret for more than 11 minutes; the LP also contains the shorter radio edit. Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride" and Skylark's "Wildflower" get classy, designer makeovers. Special kudos to the imaginative arrangements, especially Brad Shapiro's tantalizing horn charts.

Creative Source

OK, but I doubt if it is the original cuts. Seems like a remake and may not be original artist. Good effort, however.

This is The Real Thing

This album is the original Sussex recording for the group Creative Source. Please also note that thier version of "You Can't Hide Love" is the ORIGINAL version, preceeding Earth Wind & Fire's version by 3 years or so. Essential trax: Magic Carpet Ride Who is He Wildflower You Can't Hide Love

Formed: 1972 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: R&B/Soul

The Los Angeles-based quintet Creative Source seemingly appeared out of nowhere in the early '70s to score with a funky disco rendition of Bill Withers' "Who Is He (And What Is He to You)." The group, comprised of Barbara Berryman, Barbara Lewis, Don Wyatt, Steve Ranagan, and Celeste Rose, was managed by Fifth Dimensions' Ron Townsend and two of the members were seasoned vets. Lewis sang with the Los Angeles Elgins on their Lummtone recordings, while Wyatt performed with a pair of late-'50s groups...
