Customer Reviews

The Most Passionate Folk Blues Collection. Unsurpassed, Moving, Raw-- not to be missed.

It's Chicago, 1962. Bloomfield just bought his first guitar. Muddy, Buddy, and the Wolf are packing for their European tour. There is a riot going on down the street.... something to do with the cops beating up another brother. Lenoir is sitting on the beat up couch opposite me. He has his old Gibson on his knees. He begins singing. Slowly, I'm transported to a different world. I'm getting high but not on drugs... but on his music. He sings the story of his life-- the pain and anguish, the loves, the joys, the hate and injustice-- it's all there. It's as if someone is reading me a biography but with great feeling. It's the blues.

Blues for real life in the '50s and '60s

Deep blues for African-American life back in those days. Lenoir was almost forgotten until the Martin Scorcese project ("The Blues") on PBS in 2003, which restored this great bluesman to his rightful place in history. Well worth the price.

Great Political Blues

This album is what I've wanted on iTunes for so long. They've long had Mr. Lenoir's electric big band stuff from the 50s, but was sorely lacking in the latter part of his career. This is finally corrected. These songs are moving, well written, and well, passionate.

Newcomers to his considerable legacy could be forgiven for questioning J.B. Lenoir's gender upon first hearing his rocking waxings. Lenoir's exceptionally high-pitched vocal range is a fooler, but it only adds to the singular appeal of his music. His politically charged "Eisenhower Blues" allegedly caused all sorts of nasty repercussions upon its 1954 emergence on Al Benson's Parrot logo (it was quickly pulled off the shelves and replaced with Lenoir's less controversially titled "Tax Paying Blues")....
