Album Review

Passions of a Man: The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1956-1961) presents an interesting problem. There's little arguing that the music on Passions of a Man is seminal, ranking among his very best recordings. The question is whether the six-disc set is indispensable, considering that it is low on unreleased material and boasts one full interview disc. All of Mingus' Atlantic recordings between 1956 and 1961 are included in session order, with alternate takes of "E's Flat Ah's Flat Too," "My Jelly Roll Soul," "Tensions," and "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting" being added to disc three. The interview is interesting, yet most listeners will be content to hear it only once, so it simply adds time to the set. Still, the cost is justified — Passions of a Man is beautifully produced, sporting sparkling remastered sound, new liner notes as well as the original album liner notes, a complete Atlantic discography, and rare photos. For fans who have yet to purchase copies of The Clown, Mingus at Antibes, or Oh Yeah, it's an essential purchase, but those who already own those discs might find too much repetition and not enough bonuses to make it worthwhile.

Great collection of songs!

I would definitely recommend Haitian and Moanin', the berry on this song is brilliant! The saxes on this album are great, same for the trombones. I Would also recommend the album: Mingus Ah Um!!!!

A Mingus Must

I bought the Mingus Atlantic Anthology back in my college days circa '95, and although limited, it was a great precurser to the overall Mingus experience. If you are a true fan of jazz, or simply great music, then you need to explore the music of Charles Mingus. The music of Mingus is filled with soul, blues, jazz, gospel, and even the avante garde. Always consisting of exploratory players to perform the often exploratory compositions (Mingus didn't always "write" his music, but he dictated it to his band members), the Mingus groups were always tight, and incredibly creative in improvisation. Buy this compilation and immerse yourself in a true American artist and his music. Discover Charles Mingus!

Biography

Born: April 22, 1922 in Nogales, AZ

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s

Irascible, demanding, bullying, and probably a genius, Charles Mingus cut himself a uniquely iconoclastic path through jazz in the middle of the 20th century, creating a legacy that became universally lauded only after he was no longer around to bug people. As a bassist, he knew few peers, blessed with a powerful tone and pulsating sense of rhythm, capable of elevating the instrument into the front line of a band. But had he been just a string player, few would know his name today. Rather, he was...
