Strauss waltzes played by chamber ensemble. Wonderful!

Strauss played by chamber ensemble sounds entirely different than by full orchestra -- and to me, far more beautiful. A friend of mine was driving along when one of these Strauss waltzes played by the BSCO came over the radio. It was so lovely she pulled off the road so she could listen undistracted. The story I read somewhere is that Arnold Schoenberg -- the classical composer many love to hate -- was a big Strauss fan and wanted to show how beautiful Strauss waltzes could be in a small setting. So he and his students Berg and Webern transcribed the four Strauss Waltzes we have here for chamber ensemble. I only wish Arnie and the guys hadn't stopped at four. These pieces are simply wonderful. I much prefer them to the big orchestral renditions. I have given this album to friends many times. For a quick try, click Roses in the South, #2.
