Pata Pata Saved My Day

I work in Boston. I drive in Boston. There is not a worse town in the US for driving to fuel your road rage than Boston. This morning, I was driving, took a turn, forgetting the tea sitting next to me. It spilled all over my pants creating, what I briefly envisioned, an awkward situation when I arrived at work. Fortunately, the rage that began to peak quickly passed, because in that magical, wet moment Pata Pata came on my ipod. I grabbed a handful of tissues, stuck 'em to my pants, and danced the rest of my way to work. It was the best drive I've ever had.

pata pata is awesome!

My mom played this album all the time when I was growing up. When she died in 1983, the album was lost (stolen). I'm thrilled to be able to get these songs again. I'm moved to tears just listening.!!!

Amandla!

Makeba, or Mama Africa, is one of the most soulful and comforting singers in all of history. Her struggles against apartheid and racial discrimination have resulted in traditional swingin' music that makes you shiver every time you hear it. Truely a gem. It would be great if iTunes could get the soundtrack to the film Amandla! There are a few of Miriam Makeba's protest songs on that soundtrack that are amazing, including the song "Beware Verwoerd." Viva Africa!

Following a three-decade-long exile, Miriam Makeba's return to South Africa was celebrated as though a queen was restoring her monarchy. The response was fitting as Makeba remains the most important female vocalist to emerge out of South Africa. Hailed as the Empress of African Song and Mama Africa, Makeba helped bring African music to a global audience in the '60s. Nearly five decades after her debut with the Manhattan Brothers, she continues to play an important role in the growth of African music....
