iTunes Review

Michael W. Smith has proven his gifts as an instrumental artist with such popular releases as 2000’s Freedom. Glory continues in a similar orchestral vein with a cycle of new compositions invoking reverent and patriotic themes. Recording with the 65-piece London Symphonica, Smith and arranger/conductor David Hamilton take the listener from lush, classically influenced pieces to simpler settings and back again. The album brings to mind the grand scores of James Horner, Hans Zimmer, and similar film composers; with their billowing strings and yearning woodwinds, “Glory Overture,” “The Blessing,” and “The Romance” especially conjure up images of sweeping landscapes and rapturous onscreen reunions. Such dramatic flourishes are balanced by starker, more melancholy pieces like “Atonement” and “Joy Follows Suffering” (the latter featuring a poignant classical guitar solo by Mark Baldwin). The stately martial strains of “Patriot” and “Heroes” pay homage to America’s fighting forces. “Whitaker’s Wonder” lightens the mood with whimsical touches in the manner of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker.

Must-have Album

After listening to only a few songs, I already knew that Glory surpasses Michael W. Smith's old instrumental album, Freedom (not that Freedom was amazing as well). All the songs are unique with stories woven into them. It is an astounding piece of art that probably won't be surpassed unless by Michael W. Smith himself. This is definitely a must have album even to have playing as background music or to spark your inspiration.

Michael W. Smith really shows off his pure musical acumen in this fantastic orchestrated album. Great gift idea for anyone!

Smitty's Best Yet.

Smitty and David Hamilton are at the obvious heights of their powers. It's hard to imagine any MWS album being out-shined, but GLORY does just that to any of its predecessors. Simply unreal.

Michael W. Smith became one of the most enduringly popular artists in the contemporary Christian music market while also finding success as a mainstream artist. The songwriter was born in Kenova, West Virginia, the son of an oil refinery worker and a caterer. He became a devout Christian at age ten and spent his teenage years around a support group of fellow believers who frequently gathered to create music. That support group split up after high school, and Smith turned to alcohol, drugs, and wild...
