Album Review

The second straight Patti LaBelle studio album to be titled like a compilation, Classic Moments — following 2004's Timeless Journey — is an all-covers affair with a few pleasant surprises. While it won't shock fans to hear LaBelle in great form, some of the material the singer takes on couldn't have been all that expected. Soul classics like "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" (hindered by a rather plain arrangement) and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" (sounding entirely modern, even with the disco zaps and galactic keyboard effects) are natural picks, but a few other songs make this more than an average covers album, which are often spat out like contractual obligations. Highlights include strong takes on Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgetting," the Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You" (turned into a spare piano ballad) and the Jones Girls' "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else." The set's not spotless, but it's more than a stopgap release and will please LaBelle's followers.

This is quite an album! It shows that after decades in the music business, Patti LaBelle is still an amazing singer. Her dynamic vocal talents are unaffected by the march of time, and they are exemplified in every single song on this album. This is one of very few albums I have ever come across where I like every single song on it. If anything, "Land of the Living" is a bit cheesy, but I still have yet to skip over it when playing the CD (at full blast on my stereo!!). My favorites are "He's Out of My Life", "I Can't Make You Love Me", "Silly", and "Stand By You". All three duets on the album are exceptional, but I like "Your Song" best. Enjoy!!

I Like This CD, But.....

..... I'm looking for 'If Only You Knew' and 'Love Need And Want You' (the original versions). Those were two of Miss Patti's biggest hits, and they are not even on Itunes..What's up with that??

Rating the 'Heiress'-apparent's latest gift to music...This is just what it's entitled Classic Moments! From the duet w/ the reigning 'Queen of Hip-Hop Soul' to her personal interpretation of Michael's "She's Outta My Life", etc. she's is doing it as only the Ultimate Diva can!! But for me, pay close attention to her 'other' duet w/ the "King of Contemporary Rock" = Sir Elton John - their remake of "Your Song" is CLASSIC!!! Yes indeed - 5 STARS!!!!! Peace Patti...

Soul diva Patti LaBelle enjoyed one of the longest-lived careers in contemporary music, notching hits in a variety of sounds ranging from girl group pop to space-age funk to lush ballads. Born Patricia Holt in Philadelphia on May 24, 1944, she grew up singing in a local Baptist choir, and in 1960 teamed with friend Cindy Birdsong to form a group called the Ordettes. A year later, following the additions of vocalists Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, the group was rechristened the Blue Belles; with producer...
