Album Review

Mid-'60s sessions matching the Bill Evans trio with a large orchestra arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman. The strings provide a nice backdrop, but are otherwise inconsequential. Evans and bassist Chuck Israel are outstanding, with Evans' piano treatments of both classical and jazz material exceptional. Drummer Larry Bunker holds things together as the lone percussive element.

Sublime Gem From Two Masters

Talk about not getting it! The "official" review of this album is SO off the mark. This record remains one of the greatest examples of classical-jazz fusion, and has been admired -- and served as the inspiration for -- similar albums from the likes of Dave Grusin, David Benoit and others. Claus Ogerman's strings "inconsequential"? How about "perfect." Bill and Claus were in complete sync with each other on these sessions, and it shows. Buy this album and let it transport you to another time and place. Just be warned: there is some distortion on the piano tracks that could be heard not only on the original 1965 album, but on every other version I've ever owned including a Japanese import CD. This means it's on the master tapes themselves and there's very little that can be done about it, although I'd love it if someone at Verve could try and use modern digital technology to try and fix it. Even with that caveat, however, it's more than worth the $10. -- Ken Gruberman

in the perhaps 3000 albums i have( when vinal was king), this allways ranked at the top-save the scratches from being worn. Only problem is, i have relentless been awaiting a remix, as it allways struck me that the recordingquality is a-,IMHO. From my understanding, perhaps from his biography, this was a common problem with the verve recordings-sounds like there is a towel inside the piano on the strings.More importantly,The piano playing is nothing short of sublime. The left hand, skating on ice.

Great!

This is a great bunch of songs!
