Bout Time

I am a musician/vocalist based out of Orlando, FL. I have been so turned off by what the R&B/Soul market has been churning out over the past decade. Every once in a while, someone with true talent makes it through the factories of pre-fab, drum machine, 3 chord, constant riffing no melody crap. Tommy Sims is that somebody. His music was introduced to me by Calvin Turner III (bassist for Marc Broussard...if you haven't checked out Marc yet, you're missing out, but that's another review) The writing on this album is reminiscent of the Golden Age of Soul in my opinion. It's super clear that Mr. Sims is influenced greatly by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Stevie. "New Jam" sounds like it was written by Marvin, just as "Summer" sounds like Stevie was there in the studio. (maybe a little too much, but that would be my ONLY slightly negetive comment, that sometimes Sims could be accused of directly ripping songs-"Summer" IS "Big Brother" off of Talking Book-but when they sound this good, who cares???) The lyric content is also fabulous on this album. Listen to the words on "Write One". Fantastic!!! The content in "It Don't Matter" is an age old concept but he approaches it from a fresh perspective. It's so nice to hear music that isn't centered around "ho's-bitches-money-bling-and da club". In short (or long by now) Tommy Sims is a breath of fresh air in this often polluted world of Soul. There is a wonderful quality to his voice. His musicianship is fantastic and the writing is top-notch. When albums like Usher's last can go multi-platinum, there's no reason for you NOT to buy this album. Stop listening to dumbed down pop, educate yourself and start that education with Tommy Sims 101.

A Little-known Gem

This first, and as yet only, album from virtuoso songwriter/instrumentalist/producer Tommy Sims is truly a hidden gem. Panned by critics and all but ignored by the masses, it encapsulates the style and talent of a man respected in the industry, but virtually unheard of to the greater music audience. Few people know that Mr. Sims co-wrote Eric Clapton's "Change the World" best song Grammy, and has been involved with artists such as Michael McDonald, Garth Brooks, The Neville Brothers, Kelly Clarkson, Amy Grant, Bruce Springsteen, and many others. As far as "Peace and Love" the's a thoughtful, soulful classic. Channelling the sounds of greats like Marvin Gaye, Jim Croce, Prince, Stevie Wonder (who makes a guest appearance) and many others, Sims weaves a tapestry of sound and lyric that is stunningly emotive, instrumentally brilliant, and just plain gutsy. It's blues, rock, funk, pop, and it's all wrapped in lots and lots of soul. GET THIS ALBUM.

This is Music
