Editors’ Notes

As a singer, Texas blues-rock veteran Carolyn Wonderland projects a searing intensity that invites comparisons with Janis Joplin. In fact, she chooses the lesser-known Joplin tune “What Good Can Drinkin’ Do” as her opening number. A fiery cover of Elmore James’ blues standard “Dust My Broom” shows off her formidable pipes to full advantage. But Wonderland knows when to pull back as well. The insinuating “Usurper” and the wistfully countrified “Shine On” testify to her subtlety as a vocalist (as well as her songwriting talents). A distinct ‘60s vibe is evident in many tracks, such as the yearning sentiments of “St. Marks” (invoking John Lennon) and the psychedelic dreaminess of “Victory of Flying.” Unexpected cover choices, like Vince Welnick/Robert Hunter’s “Golden Stairs” and Bob Dylan’s “Meet Me in the Morning,” show her taste and imagination. Sympathetic accompaniment by the likes of Dylan guitarist Larry Campbell helps her realize her vision. Sure, Wonderland can wail. But as Peace Meal shows, she’s more than just another Joplinesque blues mama.
