Album Review

Jeff Kashiwa has a fluent if generic style on soprano, alto, and tenor, which fits perfectly into the "feel good" smooth music that he performs on "Peace of Mind." The 11 selections clock in between 3:46 and 5:14 and were clearly recorded with hopes of getting maximum radio airplay. Kashiwa's rhythm section is effective if anonymous (despite the presence of Brian Bromberg on bass) with the focus being almost entirely on the leader's melodic playing. While the music is lightly grooving and mildly soulful and Kashiwa plays well, no surprises occur and this set never rises above the level of pleasant background music.

Kashiwa Rocks (er......JAZZES!)

It's very apparent, on both recorded material and in live situations, that Jeff Kashiwa's music just keeps getting better & better. A fantastic entertainer in any live setting (whether with his own band or in his recent reunion with The Rippingtons on their 20th Anniversary Tour,) Kashiwa's chops are like a fine wine: getting better with age! I think he could (should) shortly be recognized by the music business on the same level as, for example, Kenny G - if not above it. I highly recommend "Peace of Mind" to all those who truly love Smooth Jazz and a hellacious sax!!

Starting out on the clarinet at age ten, it would be two years before the Seattle-born musician switched to saxophone. Influenced early on by such smooth jazz progenitors as Chuck Mangione and Spyro Gyra, Kashiwa eventually moved to Boston to attend Berklee College and developed an interest in straight-ahead jazz — a skill that often colors his live performances....
