Album Review

The liner notes to the dramatic, soundscape-heavy Austrian multi-instrumentalist Between Earth and Sky recording talk about the music being inspired by the beauty of nature and the wisdom and myths of various cultures. You also find out why the performer, Gandalf, chose his moniker long before Lord of the Rings, which features a character of the same name, was a movie. Still, it would be interesting to have his own personal stories and images to help your imagination as you grasp the lush and expansive tracks. "Just a Heartbeat Away" is lush, an ambient dream with a mellotron hypnosis, while "Echoes From Ancient Dreams" blends a Celtic-flavored guitar and Irish lilt with a mix of cool natural sounds. "The Blessing" blends the sonics of the deep woods with tribal percussion and the haunting wordless vocals of someone named White Horse, who also plays cello. Tunes like the harp feature "Peaceful Heart" allow for some intimacy along the road of heavier productions. Overall, the effect is pleasant, peaceful, and ultrarelaxing like a lot of similar new age efforts steeped in the ancient worlds.

Gandalf is beauty.

"Between Earth and Sky" is the first album I heard from Gandalf, and that is because my Father purchased the CD. I rather love this set of songs, and use it when I need to breathe and meditate. It makes me feel so much better inside and hope it will do the same for many others. Gandalf has helped me in so many ways.

Coping with pain and grief

This album helped me to deal with the horrible loss and anguish of losing my father suddenly to a heart attack when he was only 55 years young. I would play it at night on my headphones and it would lull me to that place where I could find rest and healing while dealing with tragedy.

I listened to the samples of the other albums by Gandalf and while I liked them, I was unconvinced any of them would have the same effect as this one.

I prefer to skip track three when I am sleeping to this album as the vocals tend to awaken me.

Thank you very much for sharing your art with me. <3

Great album

I love this album and listen to it to relieve stress. The song that just relaxes me the most is The Blessing. It seems to have a calming effect on me. I enjoy all the Gandalf albums,
