iTunes Review

Ryan Adams released three albums in 2005, issued a ton of musical and parodic scraps at his website in 2006, and finally returned in June 2007 with his ninth proper album, the deliberately restrained Easy Tiger.  Backed by the Cardinals, it’s 13 tunes, all but one under the three-and-a-half minute mark, kept stylistically close to the alt.country rock for which he is best known and appreciated (“Two,” “Everybody Knows,” “I Taught Myself How To Grow Old”). Adams occasionally indulges his Jeff Buckley vocal flights of fancy for the four-plus minute “The Sun Also Sets” and the years have mellowed him somewhat, making his presentations occasionally less the light shuffling Nashville Skyline Bob Dylan than American Beauty-era Grateful Dead. But he’s still lyrically precise and the orchestrated drama fueling “Rip Off” recalls the ambition of the mid-70s countrypolitan sound, while the Nashville-meets-L.A. ‘70s radio pop of “Two Hearts” bounces to the easy sway of the Eagles under the influence of Roy Orbison.

titles say it all.

after waiting months for ryan adams's new LP to hit stores, i can finally calm down and enjoy this latest offering. adam's music has been the perfect fit for any person who has been beat to hell emotionally by the opposite sex, and left wanting more. spiritual sparks and cardiac connections are constantly felt throughout the record's whispers and crys. adams, now 32, has aged gracefully despite the apathy and narccisism of a fledgling record industry. through personal woes, heartache, heartbreak, addictions and joy, adams serves up his best work yet, especially while having a backing band (the cardinals) as good as bob dylan's of any era. i don't know what it is about ryan adams' music that makes me feel the way i do. perhaps it's just the sensitivity of a creative person, who wears his heart on the bottom of his boots. or, that ghosts from the past make cameos in my head, as the soundtrack from this mental film plays on. it's music for the drunk, music for the lonely, music for the horny and music for loveless. but adams' music isn't just composed of sad-bastard themes and whiskey sours. there is a bit of optimism lingering in lost love, ballroom dances, and the love for a suped-up custom ford. things tend to get bittersweet upon each album's next listen, a fine wine with age for the cliched. someone once stated that adams was the greatest singer/songwriter in north america since neil young, and i probably won't refute that comment. there isn't anyone who can command the attention of someone's soul like neil young or ryan adams, for man or woman, young or old, live or dead. a musical absinthe, i like to call it... there's a level of emotional comfort that comes with every ryan adams album. it's difficult to describe, but you just know it when you feel it. it's serene, really. like you just learned something about yourself you didn't know before, and you feel like you can kick down the door to the world, and take what's inside, despite the consequences. i like that feeling. who else can take credit for that?

So incredible.

Fun fact: Ryan listened to only hip-hop while writing the songs for this record, that way he would not get any ideas. Just thought you should know that. I can not believe how amazing this album is. I expected greatness from Ryan, but this was beyond expectations. Lyrically, Ryan has grown up a lot, which I have much respect for. And the way he articulates each note takes a lot of talent.

How does he do it?

I've been a fan since Whiskeytown and I am still amazed just how beautiful Ryan's songs are. This album proves that he is the one of most prolific and talented singer/songwriter ever. Each song is memorable and the fact that all but one is under 3 1/2 minutes long just proves that he is the king of pop/ alt country/rock are whatever genre you choose.

Biography

Born: November 5, 1974 in Jacksonville, NC

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Mixing the heartfelt angst of a singer/songwriter with the cocky brashness of a garage rocker, Ryan Adams is at once one of the few artists to emerge from the alt-country scene to achieve mainstream commercial success and the one who most strongly refused to be defined by the genre, leaping from one spot to another stylistically while following his increasingly prolific muse. Adams was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina in 1974. While country music was a major part of his family's musical diet...
