A Beautiful Record

"Pennies in Hand" is the latest effort from New Orleans singer/songwriter Kelcy Mae. On this album, her most textured to date, Kelcy and her band explore new territory musically and lyrically. The opening song, "Your Two Faces," signals to the listener that this album will retain the clever lyrics of her previous efforts while taking the production work to a new level. Songs like "Pennies in Hand" and "Let's Walk the Tightrope" demonstrate how much this young singer/songwriter has grown (beautifully complex instrumentation! sing-a-longs!). She still has a knack for straight-forward songs like "The Youngest Ones" and "Take Your Time," which sound comfortably familiar and are sure to please anyone who likes a talented female singer/songwriter. Her beautiful voice also envelops the listener with songs like "Moonshiner" and "Under Those Trees."

With this record, Kelcy Mae has easily placed herself high on the list of my favorite singer/songwriters.

Great Sounding Album: A Success for Kelcy Mae

Kelcy Mae has truly taken a giant leap as a professional artist with her second full-length album "Pennies in Hand." The album starts off strong and never stops, with excellent sound production and a variety of instruments weaving in and out to keep things fresh and oh so easy to listen to. Kelcy's well-crafted songs are laden with beautiful vocal harmonies (often at the courtesy of Ms. Lucy Cordts on banjo) and poetic lyrics written by someone who loves the English language. Each song is musically unique: a difficult feat. On this album, there is the huge-sounding hit single "Pennies in Hand," the smooth alternative rock song "Carnivale," the danceable Cajun/zydeco tune "Take Your Time," and the strange, other-worldly sounding "Let's Walk the Tightrope." Not to mention, Kelcy continues a tradition with a well-arranged cover of a classic folk ballad "Moonshiner." If it is true that what you put in is what you get out, then it is apparent that much work was put into this success of a record.
