iTunes Review

The Scud Mountain Boys began simply as "the Scuds," a punk rock band out of western Massachusetts. But they soon took a stylistic about-face, which involved inverting their punk sound into quiet acoustic moments. Featuring bandleader Joe Pernice, later of the Pernice Brothers, they weren't really hillbilly punks, but rather pop aficionados eager to mix the melodic cues of Pure Prairie League and Bread with their pickin' and grinnin', all of which completed a startling transformation that placed them on the leading edge of the alt-country movement. Key tracks: "Knievel," Glass Jaw," Massachusetts"

The Best Country/Punk Album Ever

I don't understand why they put this under the genre of "country" - especially since it was released on the SubPop label. The music may be country-fied, but the lyrics aren't. ("They found a needle and a pipe she had hidden by her side...I used to know the face broken on the stearing wheel.") These guys grew out of originally being a punk band, but eventually moved to this more country feel, but kept thier punk moodiness. It's a great record - especially if your girlfriend just left you, you're depressed, or if you're generally just pissed off but don't want to disturb the neighbors by blasting Black Flag through thier walls.

I purchased this CD new in 96 on a whim when I was 19. It has never left my collection since. Joe Pernice is the most underated writer we have today. Do yourself a favor and give this a chance.

A Lost Classic

This is the melody of heartbreak and longing, where beauty meets despair. A true gem of an album, from the opening lines to the soft soaring crescendo of Knievel. This is an album that will sound good the first time, and only grow stronger each time you listen. Definitely a lost classic.

The cult popularity of Uncle Tupelo and its spin-off groups Wilco and Son Volt opened the doors for what became an entirely new generation of musicians who grew up in the punk rock generation but found genuine connection with traditional country music -- especially as interpreted through Gram Parsons, who's more or less the granddaddy of country-rock. The Scud Mountain Boys -- Joe Pernice, Stephen Desaulniers, Bruce Tull, and Tom Shea -- clearly fit into this camp. The band originally played electric...
