iTunes Review

This 18-track sampler (expanded to 23 tracks in its deluxe version) is an able introduction to a group that revolutionized the world of synth-based rock and pop throughout the '80s and onward. While no single album can summarize a band with such an extensive resume, Vol. 1 should whet the appetites of potential fans, sending them searching through the proper albums for more. For hardcore fans, "Martyr" was recorded for the Playing the Angel sessions but not released until this collection. Overall, the band's stylistic diversity is on full view here, surveying 25 years of creativity where Depeche Mode essentially wrote the rules of its alternative radio/dance club–friendly sounds. It's impossible to go wrong with a collection that features "Personal Jesus," "Just Can't Get Enough," "It's No Good," "Shake the Disease," and "Precious." If you pair this with the albums Black Celebration, Music for the Masses, and Violator, you've got the basics covered (though there's still plenty more!).

(Some of) The Best of Depeche Mode Vol. 1

While certainly not completely comprehensive, The Best Of compilation album has many of the greatest hits of the band (many of these being the most chart topping). Beginning DM fans, or those with very limited budgets will find the album quite useful, as it certainly has a great range of songs. It contains early hits like Just Can’t Get Enough, See You, and New Life. It also has many of the later hits Personal Jesus; Dream On; Suffer Well; and Precious among many more. Plus it contains the newest single not found on any other album, Martyr. It really is a good mix playing pretty smoothly from start to finish. The nice thing about actually buying the CD though, is that if you buy the special edition you get 23 music videos and “The Best of Depeche Mode A Short Film” which goes through their career and most if not all of the songs on this album.

what can I say...I am a great Depeche Mode fan ever since....This is a great collection of there greatest hits and a good start for anyone who like Depeche Mode. I love electronic music in general...beside DM I listen to songs like Contest by Liedschatten or tracks from the album Balearic House Map or even Deepest Shades Of House.
All in all great music!!

Great songs from synth pop icons

All the eras of Dep Mode are well represented, showcasing their incredible careers and breadth of styles and skill. Their evolution from dark, brooding simple pop songs to dark, even more brooding complex pop songs is remarkable. I saw them twice this year, once indoors and once outdoors, and they have not lost a step. get this album if you seek thoughtful lyrics woven into great beats and melodies.

Formed: 1980 in Basildon, Essex, England

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro pop band of the 1980s. One of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, they began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more dramatic sound that ultimately positioned them as one of the most successful alternative bands of their era. The roots of Depeche Mode date to 1976, when Basildon,...
