iTunes Review

Produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek, Icky Blossoms is a bright and aggressive synth-pop album from the Omaha trio of the same name. The rhythm tracks are tight and pumping, but where most other club-friendly groups insist on productions that are compressed into a solid, relentless flatline of sound, Icky Blossoms maintain a sense of space and dynamics. It's an artful approach that allows for greater variety and a series of left turns. "Heat Lightning" is an excited opener, but "I Am" gets plenty weird, with joyous harmonies between synthist Sarah Bohling and multi-instrumentalists Derek Pressnall and Nik Fackler turning the track into a new wave/punk delight. "Sex to the Devil" turns hypnotic with its humorously dark catchphrases spoken as android-like as possible. "Stark Weather" casts an eye toward the same teenage spree killer who inspired Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska," with a very different musical approach but the same darkness. It's an inspired debut.

Future Saddle Creek legends

As an Omaha native, I've spent the better part of my teenage years following each of Saddle Creek's releases. The release of Icky Blossoms' debut has been a release I've spent months waiting for. Let me tell you, it does not disappoint. The Faint is my favorite band, and while I can see how iTunes is able to compare the two, I believe that Icky Blossoms is following their own dance-indie path.
It's bands like Icky Blossoms that continue to put Omaha on the indie music map. Well worth the buy.

Saw them open for Phoenix in Omaha, NE. Had no idea they were from Omaha! These guys are great!!

his songwriting lyrically has taken a plunge. he seems to be wrapped up in some inter-dimensional BS rant and goes a little too far for me on the ode to sex magick track "Sex To The Devil". "Heat Lightening" and "Perfect Weather" are the albums best IMO. The album as a whole is great just wish they touched on other things lyrically. Maybe his Tilly effort will be a greater one. If you want Derek Pressnall at his best purchase Flowers Forever.

Formed: 2011 in Omaha, NE

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Icky Blossoms' combination of brooding synthesizers, danceable drums, and self-assured melodies are as welcome on the dancefloor as they are at the gym. The band formed in Omaha, Nebraska in 2011, bringing together singer/synth player Sarah Bohling and singer/multi-instrumentalists Derek Pressnall and Nik Fackler (who indie film fans may recognize as director of the Independent Spirit nominated Lovely, Still), who became acquainted through the Omaha arts scene and Pressnall's side band from Tilly...
