Speaking of the title work, a magnificently abstract work of Pergolesi, the sheer beauty of the music belies the text. Sholl, Bonney, Rousset, and Les Talens Lyriques have created an intimate, precise performance. The sophistication is very satisfying. I haven't tired of this recording in the five years I've owned it.

Mr. Scholl has the best voice I've ever heard; he always keeps it perfectly balanced---check out his recordings of Bach's St. Matthew Passion and Mass in B Minor.
I've heard of the famous Stabat Mater before-----Pergolesi's is perhaps the most moving 'Stabat Mater' in history. I'd recommend this recording to anyone who is a lover of Scholl or Pergolesi; some parts are a bit operatic, but it's still beautiful.

One of the vocal coaches soon recognized that Scholl had a countertenor voice....
