Album Review

Although most know what to expect when a telenovéla stars turn recording artist, the results for actress Karyme Lozano are atypical. Having enjoyed years of success as one of international TV's favorite stars, Lozano claims music, not drama, as her first love. Her debut release Prohibido features 13 tracks boasting ultra-hip writing and up-to-the-minute production style. Released by Machete Music, the genre's leading urban/Latin crossover label, Prohibido favors reggaeton, modern cumbia, and bolero over the sweeping pop ballads one might expect. Edgy, dirty dance beats underpin pushy horn arrangements, deft nylon string guitars, and aggressive flurries of percussion. While Lozano's vocals are not virtuosic, she demonstrates style, taste, and attitude. Though she appears to have co-written a handful of tracks, the disc's primary creative writing voice seems to be Roy Tavaré's. The entire disc is catchy and radio-ready, there are a handful of tracks that stand out. "Rico Meneito," "Se Escaparon," and "Mira" all blaze a trial that similar urban-leaning Mexican artists will certainly follow. Debut records, especially in the case of media personalities in transition, often do one of two things. Either choose to play it safe and enjoy a moderate to short lived run or, as in Lozano's case, go way out on a limb in hopes of sky high success. Prohibido shows vision, brains, and musical muscle to spare. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, Rovi
