Album Review

"Disappearing" is a magnificent piece of production and song construction, a hit-that-shoulda-been. With ringing guitars, shimmering vocal harmonies and a concise lyric, this leadoff track is three minutes and forty five seconds of pop music heaven. The rest of the album is potent power-pop, fueled by glistening guitar chords, hummable melodies, Todd Rundgren-ish vocals, and Gus Dudgeon's crystal clear production. This is an album that should have been heard, but wasn't.

Customer Reviews

Wow! Finally!

I recently bought this on cd (it only became available last year) so I am SHOCKED to see it here on itunes.

Be aware that this album is the same as "2nd Debut". Same songs BUT a different producer - Gus Dudgeon (Elton John). The suits at Columbia Records here in the US wanted a glossier/poppier/bigger hit making sound.

There are some great songs here but the manic energy of their first album "The Sound of Sunbathing" (with the songs "Take Me To Your Leader" and "World's Apart") is missing here.

"Disappearing" is a great opening song and will stay stuck in your head. Other faves: "Memory Lane", "Barcelona", "Falling In and Out of Love", and "Sleight of Hand".

The lead singer Mark Kjeldsen passed away in 1992 and the keyboardist Don Snow went on to join Squeeze after Paul Carrack left.

A real hidden gem from the early 80's that I thought I would never see on iTunes. I've searched specifically for this, about every three months, and was astounded when it was actually here this time! Very soothing sound with just enough bite. A bunch of "stick in your head all dayers". I've been playing my vinyl version occasionally for the last 30 years....but no more. "Falling in and Out of Love", "Sleight of Hand", and "Memory Lane" are guaranteed to please. Enjoy!

Stunning, Lush, Intelligent 80s Power Pop

I have waited decades for this to come out on CD... my LP of it being worn out way past listening to comfortably. From note one of the captivating "Disappearing," to the final delectable treat, "Midsong," this album is sheer beauty personified. Stellar arrangements, succinct production by Gus Dudgeon, and the perfect song-writing of Mark Kjeldsen (and Ron Francois) create an overlooked masterpiece more than worth the cost of admission. Purchase, listen, and enjoy... your heart will soar to the brilliance of "Pet Rock."
